Top 4 best contractor table saws in America

Contractors table saw is for professional craftsmen. If you need to build a serious workshop a contractors’ table saw is the starting point. I am not going to waste your time. Let us get into the market to review the top 4 best contractor table saws in America.

Here are the top 4 best contractor table saws with reviews from Jack

1. SawStop CNS175-TGP36 without blade or with blade – the best contractor table saws

SawStop is an established brand when it comes to power tools. The brand needs no introduction it’s been giving us very good saws. The CNS175-TGP36 is one of the best contractor’s table saws. If you are serious about making professional craft you will not go wrong on this saw. I have used the CNS175-TGP36 three times and both have been memorable. The first time was when I helped a start-up door and cabinet making factory to set up their workshop. The SawStop CNS175-TGP36 impressed me.

  • Dimensions – 69 1/8-inch w, 45-inch d, 34 ¾-inch h
  • Rip capacity – up to 52 inch
  • Extra options- Mobility features like Job Site Cart and Mobile Base
  • Motor size – 1.75 hp
  • Table top material – cast iron (extensions are available)
  • Working space dimensions_20”W, 27”D with extensions (44”W, 27”D)
  • Factory Table saw blade – 10”

Why the SAWSTOP CNS175-TGP36 stand out

Safety is the first reason I rank this table saw very high. Accidents happen in our field. I have seen craftsmen losing fingers due to tools that have little safety features. Providing safety for woodworkers takes a lot of customer consideration. CNS175-TGP36 made me to like this power-tool. Features like their patented SawStop security mechanism.  It works on a very clever yet simple principle. The blade carries a small electrical signal. This detects micro changes as soon as your skin touches the blade.  The blade stops instantly in 3 to 5 milliseconds. This feature relies on the fact that human skin conducts electrons.

Robustness is another reason I recommend the SawStop CNS175-TGP36. I Old Jack recommends buying good quality tools with a long useful time. Doing so will allow you to build your workshop overtime. This is because you won’t be needing to constantly replace worn-out tools. The SawStop is built with good quality material.

Another key reason to buy this table saw is the ability to make good cuts at 45degrees. (Contractor saws usually disappoint when making 45 degree cuts. Reason is the weight of cantilevered motors causes the trunion to twist. So the blade will no longer parallel with the fence. That in turn, leads to rough cuts with a lot of burning. The SawStop CNS175-TGP36 solved that issue. The SawStop Contractor saw is a left tilt saw. That means the blade tilts away from the fence, to prevent the wood from binding against the fence. Other, manufactures incorporated the tilt. Yet, fail to make sure that the break doesn’t break when tilted.

During use, blade adjustment is one thing that always annoys me. This power tool has a very easy blade adjustment mechanism which does not slow down your tempo.

The CNS175-TGP36 table saw has good storage. There is a magnetic holder for the blade gap device. Hangers for the miter gauge, arbor wrenches and blade guard. And a magnetic backed quick reference manual. All this give one convenience of an uncluttered workshop.

Maintenance is also an important thing to consider. This table saw is low maintenance. So even novices will find it easy to manage.

One last feature I want to point put is that the SawStop CNS175-TGP36 is easy to assemble. The manufacturer did a good job in making very clear instruction

Areas of Concern

It does not accept Dado blades. This doesn’t matter to most professionals. Yet I have seen several guys complaining about it. There are also issues of the table not being as flat as it should be. The Extended wings have been disappointing to others too. My major concern is the plastic features which compromise “robustness” of the tool.

2. Powermatic 1791230K 64B Table Saw

Powermatic is a respected brand when it comes to power tools. The brand has been with us for some time here in the woodwork community. I love this brand a lot and have recently bought other Powermatic products. I don’t own one, but I have had the chance to use it during my consultancy work. (I get to experienced many tools as I help woodwork firms across the nation). I liked this table-saws performance and quality.

  • Dimensions – 70 x 32 x 34 inch
  • Rip capacity – up to 50inch
  • Motor size – 1.75 hp
  • Working space dimensions_20 1/8”, 27”D with extensions (44-1/4”W, 27”D)
  • Factory Table saw blade – 10”

Why the Powermatic 1791230K 64B Table Saw stand out?

The Powermatic 64B table saw impressed me because of its general look and feel. Powermatic made the design robust. The look and feel of the Powermatic 64B gives a good impression of a power-tool. The table is made from precision ground cast iron. This ensures a flat working surface. The 64B’s trunnion is of heavy cast-iron for smooth blade positioning.

During use, the table saw does not disappoint. Powermatic made sure that the table saw is adequately powered with a 1 -3/4 horsepower dual voltage motor. This motor is large enough to meet the demands of professional woodworkers. One might argue that 1.75 hp is not enough power. But, the 64B has a belt-driven motor. This makes it easy to deal hardwoods up to about 1-1/2 inches without any issue.

Ripping capacity is an important feature of contractor table saws. The 64B comes with a 50 inches ripping capacity. This is enough working space.

Another useful feature is the transparent blade guard with independent leaves. It’s a feature I have come to appreciate during jobs.

Adjustments are usually annoying during a job. Powermatic took that into consideration. The arbor lock is accessed from above the table eliminating the need for dual blade wrenches. The tool-less mounting and removal of the blade guard and the riving knife is convenient. During a job its tedious to adjust these features with a tool.

Dust collection is an issue when working with table saws. The health risk posed by Saw dust is hazardous to health. Powermatic equipped the 64B with a Built-in-extortion port to increase dust collection efficiency. Making sure one has a safe working environment.

The 64B comes with a standard set of safety features to be expected by every table saw sold today. These are a riving knife and a blade guard. Every table saw sold in the US is required by law to include a blade guard and riving knife at least. Many manufacturers fail to strike a good balance between usability and safety. The more they try to make the table safe the more the table becomes “clunky”. This isn’t the case with the Powermatic 1791230K 64B. There is a fine balance of safety and usability.

Precision is a key issue when dealing with table saws. The Powermatic 64B has a patented Accu-Fence to lock the miter tail firmly during use. This is crucial when doing high precision work like furniture making.

Last piece of good news is for Dado blade enthusiasts. The 64b comes with dado insert accessory from the factory. So if you want a good table saw to fit dado blades then the Powermatic 64 B is a good option.

Areas of Concern

This is a good tool. The only issue is that since Powermatic is not a very big brand. I have concerns with the support of the tool.

3. Jet 708492K JPS-10TS

The manufactures introduce the saw by saying, “the JET ProShop Table Saw offers features you expect from a high-end cabinet saw, in the compact design of a contactor-style machine”. From my experience, there is a lot of merit to this. I have experienced the Jet JPS-10TS in one of my workshops. My manager Brian spoke highly of the JPS-10TS and I decided to try it for myself.

  • Dimensions – 82x 35x 39 inch
  • Rip capacity – options of between 30 inch and 52 inch
  • Motor size – 1.75 hp
  • Working space dimensions 27 inch x 44 inch
  • Table type Cast iron
  • Factory Table saw blade – 10”

Why does the JPS-10TS stand out

The Jet JPS-10TS is an exceptional contractors’ table saw. The manufacturer delivered a contractor’s table saw with good work performance. During use, I noticed that the table makes some of the cleanest cuts in this class of tools. The cuts are so clean that you generate very little sawdust in comparison with other table saws in its class

One other key issue which affects use is the rip fence. The JPS-10TS’s rip-fence remains firmly secure. There is very little deflection. All this contributes to increased precision during craft. The rip fence scale is a well-designed magnifying cursor. The miter gauge has three adjustable stages plus the miter bar has adjusters to snug up the fit in the miter lock. All this contributes to high-quality work. Which is important for building a brand. As Old Jack does not tolerate low-quality tools because they ruin my hard-earned reputation.

Jet delivered more usability features than most contractors table saws. One of such is the riving knife that maintains close blade proximity to reduce chances of kickback. This provides workplace safety and security. I have a sense of comfort when working on this table saw. The tool-less adjustment makes this table saw even more user-friendly.

On top of its great rigidity, the weight of the entire device acts as a very effective dampener. This also reduces any remaining vibration. As a result, one is able to enjoy smooth operation that would usually be available at a much higher price range.

For those who love Dado blades. This table saw accepts Dado’s so you will be sorted in that respect.

I recommend this table saw for users of all levels of expertise novices, intermediate and professionals. Even for schools looking to get a table saw for training purposes.

Last but not least it’s the issue of good dust collection. The table saw has features to ensure a healthy saw dust-free workshop.

Grey Areas

The JPS-10TS is difficult to assembly for first-time use. My biggest concern with tools that are difficult to assemble is that if the initial set up is done wrongly.  There is a high chance of damaging the tool. Also one may get injured if the table saw is not assembled well

4. Delta Power Tools 36-5100

Delta is an established American machinery brand. The Delta 36-5100 is a well-engineered contractors table saw. Which meets the needs of professionals and novices alike.

  • Dimensions – 82x 35x 39 inch
  • Rip capacity – options of between 30 inch
  • Motor size – 1.75 hp
  • Working space dimensions 20”W X 27”L (50”W X 27”L with wings)
  • Table type Cast iron
  • Factory Table saw blade – 10”

Why Delta 36-5100 stand out

The Delta 36-5100 contractor table saw is a well-designed power tool due to many reasons. Delta claims that “It is maximized for precision, stability, mobility, and durability.” I took delivery of a rental 36-5100 when I went to do work in another state.

The first thing I noticed is that the easy of mobility attributed to two fixed wheels and one swivel wheel. Mobility is a factor for an Old Jack it saves me from heavy lifting. The second thing I noticed is the Sturdy frame. The Delta 36-5100 is robust and can endure being roughed up. This table is so robust that one can use it daily for years without trouble. This makes it a great investment for those looking to build a workshop over time. The Motor delivers adequate power for a wide range of lumber.

During use, the Delta 36-5100 delivers precision cuts. This is due to the heavy-duty one-piece rail system which ensures precision cuts every-time. The rip fence stays well put due to the heavy-duty Biesemeyer design. This design along with dual rip windows to allow for precision cuts most of the times. The table saw has a very large and accessible ON/OFF switch. This feature is necessary for both convenience and safety. Once power is off, the blade brake stops the blade from spinning with spinning within seconds.

Delta also ensures that the table saw is easy to assembly. The instructions are straightforward for the novice and professional alike. This is not only convenient. It also reduces the chances of damaging the tool or injury due to incorrect assembly.

Grey Areas

The Table saw does not accept dado blades.
